BWW Reviews: Actors' Theatre of Columbus- Shakespeare at Schiller Gets Warm Reception Despite Chilly Evening

(5/24/2013) - Actors' Theater of Columbus opened its 32nd summer season with its Annual Opening Night Tent Dinner last night in the Schiller Park amphitheater. Despite the uncooperative weather canceling the performance of "King Arthur and the Sword of Britain", the crowd was abuzz with excitement over this season's line-up of free summer theater productions in the park.

(5/20/2013) - Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird, and all their Sesame Street friends are taking to the stage to share their love of music in Sesame Street Live's Elmo Makes Music. Jenny, an enthusiastic new music teacher, arrives on Sesame Street only to discover that her instruments are missing. Jenny's new Muppet friends quickly come to the rescue and discover 'instruments' they never knew existed-rubber duckies, trash can lids, and even cookie jars. Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and friends teach children that everyone can make and enjoy beautiful music together.

400 Columbus School Kids Take Over the Capitol Theatre Stage for MOVING LIVES!, 5/14 & 17

(5/10/2013) - The 10th anniversary of Momentum: Excellence at the Speed of Dance, a year-long in-school program that uses dance to teach elementary students self-discipline and teamwork, and engages children to think creatively, will be celebrated with performances of "Moving Lives! A Year in the Life of a Momentum Dancer," Tuesday, May 14th and Friday, May 17th at The Capitol Theatre in the Riffe Center (77 South High Street). There are two hour-long performances each day, the first at 10:30 a.m. followed by a performance at 1 p.m. THE PERFORMANCES ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Tickets are available on a first come first serve basis on the day of the show.

(5/3/2013) - If you liked Short North Stage's recent production of "Passing Strange", you'll love CATCO's current show, "Five Guys Named Moe". Both musicals, each show features a young, lost, African-American man who gets a schooling from some older, wiser musicians. While the former was a good show in its own right, CATCO's "Five Guys Named Moe" production is an entire ensemble as smooth as the jazz tones the characters sing, in glorious harmony.

The Columbus Symphony Joins Gil Shaham and the Dubuque Symphony for Grand Opening Concert, 5/11

(5/2/2013) - On Saturday, May 11, the Columbus Symphony, the Dubuque Symphony, and internationally renowned violinist Gil Shaham will perform a special concert for the grand opening of the University of Dubuque's new, state-of-the-art Heritage Center. The collaboration was initiated by Columbus residents Joe and Linda Chlapaty, graduates of Dubuque and major supporters of the $30 million, 80,000 square foot campus center for fine arts, performing arts, and worship. The evening's program includes Beethoven's Seventh Symphony conducted by DSO Music Director William Intriligator which will be followed by the Brahms Violin Concerto conducted by CSO resident Associate Conductor Peter Stafford Wilson and featuring guest violinist Gil Shaham.

LES MISERABLES Returns to Columbus, 5/14-19

(5/1/2013) - Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Boublil and Schonberg's Les Miserables has music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer from the original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, additional material by James Fenton and original adaptation by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The original Les Miserables orchestrations are by John Cameron with new orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke and additional orchestrations by Stephen Metcalfe and Stephen Brooker. The production is directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell, designed by Matt Kinley inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo with costumes by Andreane Neofitou and additional costumes by Christine Rowlands, lighting by Paule Constable, sound by Mick Potter, musical staging by Michael Ashcroft, and projections by Fifty-Nine Productions.

(4/19/2013) - Short North Stage opened the regional premiere of the Tony-Award winning 'Passing Strange" last night in the gorgeous Garden Theater. Directed by Mark Clayton Suthers, "Passing Strange", with book and lyrics by Stew, tells the story of a young black musician on his artistic journey of self-discovery from his start in middle-class, South-Central Los Angeles in the late 70's, to the hash bars of Amsterdam, and the post-punk scene of Berlin, where he finds a temporary family in a group of German radicals, and struggles desperately to find his own "artistic soul".
